UBC Free the Children has many facets; Anything from local initiatives to international efforts, fundraisers to volunteer appreciation and everything in between. WE have a place for you.
Take a moment to check out some of the things below that our club does!
We Support a Single Country and Pillar Each Year
Each year, we chose one of WE Charity's eight countries to support through donations to one or more of the five pillars. In our premiere year as a UBC club in the 2012/2013 year we supported Clean Water projects in Kenya, we carried this through to our 2013/2014 year when we finished financing a well in Kenya. Two years ago, in 2014/2015 we supported Nicaragua in their efforts provide Job Opportunity and Alternative Income and Education. Last year, in 2015/2016, we chose to support all five pillars for India in the hopes of supporting Women's rights within each pillar. Our country and pillar choice will be decided this year at the first General Meeting on Wednesday Sept 28th from 6-730 in Henry Angus Room 295.
Free the Children allows its members to become involved as much or as little as they like. Members can attend monthly general meetings to help brainstorm for upcoming events, learn about volunteer opportunities or sign up to be more involved. Members are also welcome to attend committee meetings for the events they are passionate for and will have the opportunity to help out more. In addition, all executive meetings are open to all members every Monday from 730-830. If you are interested, send UBC Free the Children's Facebook page a message and we will pass on the agenda and location.
WE Work Closely with the Vancouver WE Charity Branch.
We work with the Vancouver WE Charity Branch very closely on local and international initiatives and this has its perks! We are lucky enough to have WE Charity Speakers at our events, WE merchandise, the support of the WE team, and an occasional pair of concert tickets! We are also lucky enough to attend WE Day every year, check out our Facebook page to apply for our ticket lottery!
WE support local initiatives!
Each year we try to hold one event to support our Vancouver and UBC community. This year we will be partnering up with the Vancouver WE Charity Branch and Ford Motor Company to put on Halloween for Hunger! H4H is an annual food drive in which all monetary funds and non-perishable food items are donated to the AMS Food Bank and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank!
